Level 4 Gymnastics Overview
Gymnasts usually start at Level 4, the first compulsory level. Some gyms and toddler programs allow children 3+ to learn basic Level 1-3 skills. To move up levels, gymnasts must meet Junior Olympic minimum age requirements and build relevant skills.
The minimum age for the Gold division is 7 years old. The silver division is similar to Level 4. Level 5 has compulsory routines. Levels 4 and 5 differ in judging and skill requirements. Some clubs don’t stress compulsory meets.
Level 4 Requirements:
- Floor: Straddle jump, front handspring, back extension roll, back walkover, round-off back handspring.
- Bars: Flexibility, strength, body awareness.
Level 4 Gymnastics Skills and Progression
A back handspring is typically Level 3 or 4. Level 4 bar changes include sole circle, high bar jump after squat/pike on, straddle back swings. Common deductions include bent arms/legs, leg separations, poor rhythm, incomplete turns.
5-7 year olds usually reach Levels 1-3. Bailie Key turned elite at 11, the youngest ever. Progressing levels takes approximately one year but depends on the athlete. Prerequisites are required first.
