Tint Darkness and Visibility
A 35% tint will give you more darkness. 20% tint is darker than 35% tint. With a 20% tint, it’s difficult to see through the window from an outside view. A 35% tint is still easy to see through. If privacy is your purpose for tinting, a 20% tint is an excellent choice.
Balancing Privacy and Sun Protection
25% window tint is a good option. It’s not too dark, but not too light either. It’s a great choice for those who want some privacy and sun protection without making the car too dark. Below is a before and after picture of a car that started with no window tint film and then added a 25 percent tint.
State Regulations and Comparison
California allows 25% VLT for side and rear windows. Front windshield and front windows must allow 70% VLT.
A 30% tint is darker than 50% tint, offering better sun protection. It still allows easy visibility.
Besides popular 35% and 20% tints, most states allow 50% tint. These reduce UV rays and are seen on new vehicles.
Darkest Legal Tint and Visibility Considerations
Darkest legal tint: Windshield top 4 inches. Front windows over 88% light. Back windows any darkness.
50% and 35% tints are effective for UV and heat, reducing glare. 35% offers a stylish dark look with visibility. 20% and below increase privacy.
Lower percentages are darker. 5% tint is much darker than 35% and is considered the darkest for most legal standards.
