PetSmart Overview
PetSmart is a privately held American chain of pet superstores founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty. Its stores in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico sell pet products, offer services like grooming and training, and facilitate dog and cat adoptions. PetSmart competes with Petco, Amazon, Walmart, and Target. As of 2020, PetSmart has over 1,650 stores.
PETA Investigation of Suppliers
In January 2016, PETA revealed details of an investigation of Holmes Farm, a major supplier of live animals to Petsmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus. The investigation highlighted abusive conditions at what is described as a complex of "filthy, windowless warehouses."
Petco and PetSmart Ownership
Petco and PetSmart are separate companies with no ties to each other. They are not owned by the same company, and neither owns the other. PetSmart has more stores and a much higher annual revenue than Petco in 2023.
Comparison with Walmart
Walmart and PetSmart compete in pet food sales. Walmart does not own PetSmart; the two are different companies.
