Types of Water-Based Paints
Water-based paints use water as the solvent. They contain pigments, fillers, and binders dissolved in water. Acrylic paint dries quickly, is flexible and cleans up with water yet remains permanent once dry. Acrylics are versatile to be used for different painting styles and techniques. With no fumes, they are non-flammable and have very little odor.
Latex vs. Acrylic Paint
There are two main types of water-based paint: latex and acrylic. Water-based paints are easier to find than oil-based ones. They have quick drying properties, low odor, and easy application which makes them suitable for DIY projects. Water-based paints should usually only be used for painting walls and ceilings. They should generally not be used on metal surfaces where oil-based paints adhere better.
Solvent Used Determines Paint Type
When referring to whether a paint is oil or water-based, we refer to the type of solvent used. Water is the main solvent in water-based acrylic paint. Oil-based paints use mineral turpentine. Acrylics are versatile to be used for different painting styles and techniques. Although the vast majority of acrylic paints are water-based, not all water-based paints are acrylic.
