Should a Doula Have Liability Insurance?

Importance of Doula Liability Insurance

Most doulas have Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance. Public Liability covers doulas if a client is injured during a doula’s work. Liability insurance provides a sense of security and allows the doula to focus on guiding their clients without worrying about legal issues. Insurance costs about $60/year. That and following DONA guidelines should provide enough protection.

Coverage and Limits

Make sure policies cover professional negligence and personal liability. Negligence coverage protects if sued for a mistake while working. Personal liability protects if sued for something outside professional work.

Most policies have a limit per claim and in total. The per-claim limit is the most a policy pays for one claim. The aggregate limit is the total amount paid during the policy period, usually one year.

Insurance Coverage and Client Engagement

Doulas aren’t covered by Medicare or private insurance. But some Medicaid programs cover them. Standard plans may not cover doulas, but some offer maternity coverage that might. Contact your provider to explore coverage options.

Postpartum doulas typically charge $20-$50 per hour. Most have packages that group hours together. More hours purchased lowers hourly rates.
