Importance of Freshness and Grinding
- In most scenarios, you only have 2-3 weeks once the coffee is roasted to experience it at peak freshness and flavor.
- The top layer of coffee (the most exposed) has only 20-30 minutes of peak freshness once it’s ground. The lower levels have longer peak freshness.
- For ground coffee, freshness declines rapidly and noticeably after 30 minutes.
Grinding Tips for Coffee Beans
- You should grind coffee beans fresh every day for best taste and freshness. Grinding ahead will make it stale.
- Do not rinse beans before grinding. It will make cleaning difficult and quicken oxidation.
Brewing and Storage Recommendations
- Store roasted coffee beans in an airtight container. Only grind what you will use in the next 15-30 minutes. Freshly ground coffee has a stronger flavor.
- Making coffee from pods is more expensive than from beans. Grind beans fresh daily for cheaper, better coffee. If buying in bulk, separate beans into smaller portions for use within a couple of weeks.
Other Important Details
- For 10 cups (60 ounces), grind 108-120 grams of beans. For stronger coffee, use a finer grind and more beans. For weaker coffee, use a coarser grind and fewer beans.
- Conical burr grinders crush the beans and produce a consistent grind. Blade grinders shear the beans, causing a burnt taste. Fresh ground is better quality than pre-ground.
- Grind coffee to a medium, sand-like texture. Wet the grounds, wait 30 seconds, then pour half the water over 30 seconds. Pour the rest in smaller increments.
- Grinding brings out coffee flavor from each bean. Grinding creates more surface area, quickening oil dilution. So freshly ground coffee has greater oil concentration.
