Starter Animals
Good starter animals offer popularity, lower maintenance, and breeding potential. Peafowls are colorful, relatively low maintenance yet appealing. Springboks and Common Warthogs are also great to start with due to a small space requirement and short gestation period. Once you have more money, you can add Plains Zebras and Sable Antelopes. An interspecies African herbivore enclosure is affordable and easy to maintain.

Management and Expansion
It’s advisable to delay hiring staff until your existing staff are stretching thin. You could potentially manage with one keeper per 2-3 enclosures. Breeding peafowl is recommended due to their quick maturation and prolific breeding capabilities.
Additionally, grouping different exhibit animals together makes for easier care and provides the opportunity to sell offspring to help finance your new zoo.
Animal Selection Tips
- When beginning a new zoo, certain animals are advantageous to start with due to their popularity, lower maintenance, and breeding potential.
- Giraffes, ostriches, and bison are good additions as your zoo grows.
- Carnivores such as African Wild Dogs, Hyenas, Cheetahs, and Timber Wolves are ideal for new zoos.
Peafowls offer a solid foundation: highly appealing to guests while being relatively low maintenance. Their eye-catching plumage and small space requirements make them perfect introductory animals. Aldabra Giant Tortoises boast longevity and are a superb choice for a low-maintenance exhibit.
