Raised and In-Ground Beds
There are two main types of nursery beds: raised beds and in-ground beds. Raised beds are ideal for small operations due to easy assembly, cost effectiveness, and quick setup. They are made with wood or metal and filled with soil for seedling growth.
Bed Types and Configuration
There are three main bed types: flat, raised, or sunken. These can be open, under shade, or in a greenhouse. Sunken beds are about 1 meter square and 10 centimeters deep.
- Total nursery area is calculated as follows:
- Seed bed area multiplied by 2.5
- Plus 100 square meters for paths
- Based on 2000 seedlings per square meter
Planning for Nursery Beds
Proper nursery planning provides adequate water, tools, and inputs for quality planting material.
- Seed beds are located near offices for close monitoring.
- Nursery beds are larger sections for growing saplings from seeds.
- Pot yards are designated for growing tender seedlings.
Seed Selection for Nursery Beds
Growers must choose high-quality, disease-resistant varieties suited to their conditions. This is essential to prevent losses in yields and revenue.
There are different bed options for children at different stages of growth:
- Baby cribs for infants
- Toddler beds for young toddlers
- Twin beds for older toddlers
- Full beds for the largest, intended for older children
When selecting a bed, it is important to choose durable models that suit space needs and blend with existing furniture.
