Introduction to Effleurage Technique
Effleurage is a massage technique used in Swedish massage. It involves long, smooth, rhythmic strokes over the skin using fingertips or palms. Continuous gentle but firm pressure is applied to larger body parts like the legs or back. More force is used as the therapist moves toward the heart and less on the return stroke.
Effleurage means "to skim" or "to touch lightly on" in French. It is a series of strokes to warm up muscles before deeper massage and serves as a linking move between strokes. Effleurage involves circular stroking with the palm, soothing nerves when done slowly.
Types of Effleurage
The types of effleurage include:
- Long stroke
- Circling
- Feathering
These are superficial strokes where tension is palpated with fingers. Full hand surfaces are used, including fingers, thumbs, and palms. Various hand surfaces can effleurage, such as whole hands, fists, knuckles, fingertips, and forearms.
Benefits and Application of Effleurage
Effleurage increases temperature, improves circulation, and enhances blood flow to the skin. It prepares muscles for deeper massage and provides soothing effects afterward. Pressure during effleurage can range from light to deep. It also helps in establishing a comfortable rapport between the client and the therapist.
