BTS Formation and Success
BTS was formed in 2010 by Bang Si-hyuk, CEO of Big Hit Entertainment. Seeing declining physical album sales and insufficient digital revenue, Bang decided to create an idol group to diversify income through passionate fans and concert sales. Between 2010-2012, he recruited RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jin and Jungkook to form a seven-member boy band. Though initially a hip hop group like YG’s 1TYM, BTS incorporated various genres into their music. Their lyrics about youth anxieties and worries created an empathy that fans related to. This became their goal – to give voice to stories people wanted to hear.
