Today I’m sharing things I wish I knew before starting my journey in the nail industry. I’ve been a licensed nail tech for 4 years now. Here are the top things you should know when starting as a nail tech:
- Most courses take around two months. You will study techniques and watch them being carried out by leading artists and technicians before practicing them yourself.
- The “standard” path to becoming a nail tech is to first complete a nail tech certification program or a cosmetology program. Each specific option has a different timeline.
- There are general beauty therapy level 2 and level 3 courses that include nail therapy.
- The National Vocational qualification is a work-based course.
- BTEC courses are highly regarded by employers in the vocational industry like fashion and beauty.
- A nail technician specializes in artificial nails such as gel and acrylics for those wanting something creative.
- They give hand and foot massages during manicure and pedicure sessions while shaping, buffing, polishing and airbrushing nails.
- A nail tech uses equipment during the session.
Key Qualities of a Good Nail Technician
Attention to detail is important. Take time with each task without error, especially with designs. Interpret the client’s wishes and get approval before they leave.
Grow by educating yourself on trends. Aside from meeting licensing requirements, study products, tools and laws. A reputable education is needed for a salon or your own business.
Good communication provides understanding of client needs. It’s important for having good conversations so clients have a social experience. Improve talking skills to become a known, friendly nail tech.
Having knowledge takes you far. Know what you’re talking about and doing. Add length and width with artificial nails for intricate designs. Neat and tidy work shows professionalism and pride. Good customer service ensures positive experiences.
Work quickly and efficiently to provide the best timely service. Pay close attention to details. Be passionate about your work, especially in customer service roles.
