Modern tanning beds emit between 3-5 times the amount of UV rays the midday sun does. Generally speaking, 20 minutes in a tanning bed is roughly about 2 hours of sun exposure. However, this depends greatly on the individual as some people burn quicker than others.
How do Tanning Beds Work?
Tanning beds imitate the sun’s UV radiation through artificial lamps. It is important to remember that even though the UV radiation is produced by artificial means, it is still just as dangerous as natural sunlight.
Basically, the UV radiation stimulates the melanocytes which are found in the deepest part of the epidermis, to produce melanin. Melanin is what gives the skin a darker pigment.
Tanning lotions are often applied before entering the tanning bed to deepen the tan and hydrate the skin.
Eye protection is usually worn when inside the tanning bed to protect the eyes from the UV radiation.
What Should I Wear In a Tanning Bed?
The straight answer to this question is to wear whatever you’re comfortable in. Many people tan nude in tanning beds to avoid tan lines. If you are more comfortable wearing clothing though, you can wear undergarments such as underwear, or you can wear your bathing suit. Keep in mind that if you tan in the same clothing each time you go, you will get tan lines that reflect the clothing choice.
Protective eyewear should always be worn and most salons provide eyewear free of charge. Some salons charge you a small amount to purchase your own that you will be required to wear for each tanning session.
How to Get the Most out of My Tanning Session?
You should shave and exfoliate at least 24 hours before your session, not the day of.
Avoid wearing heavy perfumes or colognes and essential oils before your session.
Use a tanning lotion to prolong your tan. Ask at your tanning salon and they will go over your options with you based on your skin type and tanning goals.
