What is 6G certified?
6G certification for welders is a qualification awarded by the American Welding Society after passing a test. The test focuses on welding an object in the 6G position, the most difficult orientation.
The 6G welding position combines structural and pipe welding positions, with transitions between them. To complete the weld, both hands are needed to weld a hard and easy side. This is a complicated weld requiring skill and practice.
Obtaining 6G certification shows a welder can perform this difficult welding. The test examines Shielded Metal Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding processes. The 6G Pipe Welding Certification is the highest level, essential for welders working in extreme positions.
The certification standards have different procedures but entail performing a weld meeting criteria.
The 6G test consists of a welding procedure qualification test and a welder performance qualification test. The first qualifies the procedure, the second qualifies the welder.
The American Welding Society offers 6G certification and works with organizations to test for it. AWS lists over 80 accredited testing facilities for the 6G certification test.
The letter "G" stands for a groove weld and the number "6" designates the pipe position. Vertical welds are most demanding as molten metal flows downwards. With its role in industries, there is demand for skilled 6G welders.
