Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Section 611 allows consumers to challenge questionable items on credit reports, such as late payments, charge-offs, collections, tax liens, bankruptcies, judgments, foreclosures, or personal identification information. Inaccurate information can lead to lower credit scores, resulting in higher interest rates on loans or denials.
The 611 Dispute Letter
A 611 credit dispute letter is a follow-up when an agency replies that it verified the mentioned information. It requests the verification method used for disputed information and refers to Section 611 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Consumers have this right under FCRA section 611 (a) (7).
Other Dispute Methods
- The 604 dispute letter asks bureaus to remove report errors under FCRA section 604.
- The 623 dispute method allows disputing a debt directly with the creditor in question, after filing a complaint with the bureau and completing their process. It refers to FCRA section 623.
