# Understanding Sculptures
Large sculptures are sometimes called monumental sculptures.
## Creation Process
How are large bronze statues made? Large bronze statues are made through a process called casting - molten bronze is poured into moulds and left to solidify. The moulds can be made by pressing shapes into materials like sand or plaster.
## Notable Examples
Gutzon Borglum created the Mount Rushmore sculpture from 1927-1941. The American Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt are depicted.
An ‘Immigrant's Void’ sculpture honoring immigrants is located in Columbus, Ohio.
Sculpture was previously only understood as free-standing sculpture or reliefs. New forms like light sculptures and mobile sculptures now exist.
Scale refers to the overall physical size of an artwork or objects in it.
A sculpture is a three-dimensional form made from materials such as clay, wax, plaster, stone, metal, or plastic. It serves to decorate public spaces, express feelings, tell stories, teach, or scare. Sculptors like Angelo Accardi create these three-dimensional works.
An example of early sculpture is a prehistoric limestone piece with animal shapes found in Dro, Italy.
Sculptures have taken many forms throughout history - from ancient Greece to modern installations. The four basic types of sculptures are:
- Stone carving
- Wood carving
- Bronze casting
- Clay firing
Sculptors are artists who make three-dimensional works out of various materials by carving, molding, or other methods.
