Benefit Corporations and B Corps
A benefit corporation is a legal structure like an LLC or a corporation. Benefit LLCs are authorized in a few states including Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Kansas and Delaware. B corps are driven by both mission and profit. B corps are different from C corps in purpose, accountability, and transparency, but aren’t different in taxation.
LC3: Low-Carbon Cement Alternative
LC3 is a low-carbon alternative to ordinary Portland cement developed by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. LC3 consists of clinker, calcined clay, limestone and gypsum resulting in 40 percent less carbon emissions over traditional cement and 25 percent lower production cost. LC3 production and performance depends on clay availability and kaolinitic content.
Implementing LC3 in existing integrated cement plants, grinding stations or greenfield projects is financially attractive. LC3 aims to introduce a “greener” cement in Latin America through technical advice to producers and economically successful production mechanisms to combat climate change. Global cement production is fast rising and responsible for almost 10 percent of CO2 emissions. Expanding the built environment equitably and reducing vulnerability to global warming effects requires substantial cement.
LC3 and Municipal Partnership
LC3 works collaboratively with diverse local stakeholders as a trusted partner convened through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund. Locally governed, LC3 mobilizes resources to design climate solutions benefitting municipalities. As an agile, accelerator network harmonizing with local authorities, LC3 advances municipal leadership. Network accountability and efficiency increase through the pan-Canadian climate centre network.
