ATF Certification Overview
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is a federal law enforcement organization within the United States Department of Justice. The ATF issues interstate commercial licenses for the sale, possession, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. ATF’s Federal Explosives Licensing Center issues and renews Federal explosives licenses and permits submitted by industry members.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has established specific qualifying standard criteria that all applicants must meet to obtain a Federal Firearms License (FFL). To qualify, one must meet the following requirements: Age Requirement, Citizenship, Legal Business Premises, Compliance with Local and State Laws.
Application Process and Requirements
For all license types, the FFLC will send the applications to the nearest ATF field office having responsibility for the area in which the business is located. The field office supervisor will issue an assignment to an Industry Operations Investigator who will conduct an in-person interview with you.
The applicant must have a business location that satisfies ATF specifications regarding the type of license being applied. The applicant must comply with all local and state laws relating to firearms and ammunition.
Responsibilities and Regulations
The ATF is also responsible for investigating federal offenses involving illegal activities in the manufacturing and possession of firearms and explosives, as well as illegal distribution of alcohol and tobacco products. ATF is responsible for regulating firearm commerce in the United States.
