Mountain Climbing Terminology
The transitive verb "summit" refers to reaching the top of a hill or mountain. The term I’ve heard most frequently employed by actual mountain climbers is ‘summit’. Rock climbing is an activity in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the endpoint of a pre-defined route without falling. That brief moment at the top of the arc, before falling back down, is considered the deadpoint. From an insecure position, the climber creates movement with their hips inwards, towards the wall. The most common meaning of the term "bomber" in climbing, is referring to a strong and reliable piece of gear.
History of Mountain Climbing
The sport of mountain climbing was born in 1760. A young scientist offered prize money for the first person to reach the summit of Mount Blanc, Europe’s tallest peak. But humans have been climbing mountains for the challenge long before that time.
Mountain Features and Descriptions
At 29,000 feet above sea level, Mount Everest’s peak reaches farthest into the sky. But even this appears just part of the planet it is on. The top of a mountain is the peak. The base is where it meets flat ground. The height is from sea level. The snow line shows where snow is on top. A mountain’s highest point is the peak or summit. The bottom where it meets ground is the base. Most mountains occur in groups called ranges.
The Action of Reaching the Mountain Top
If you manage reaching a mountain top, ‘summitted’ is a way to describe that.
