A dharma name marks initiation or special occasions and is traditionally given by a Buddhist monastic. This name reflects the lineage of the practitioner and the qualities they may develop during their spiritual journey. During the Refuge ceremony, initiatory names are received. For instance, as a lay-friend, I received the name Hanh Ngoc, which later became Hanh Lien.
Dharma has meanings such as truth, duty, and purpose, and is derived from the concept of "uphold". It is believed that intelligence influences one’s purpose in life. In some traditions, children are named after gods with the hope that they will embody the attributes of those deities.

It’s common for Buddhist teachers to acquire several dharma names throughout their careers, which often signify different milestones or recognitions on their path.

Attributes like motivation can be affected by various personal and astrological elements, such as "trines to the ascendant". Additionally, the term "Shastra" relates to the secret or essence of dharma, further emphasizing the depth of meaning in these spiritual names.
