A PDI is a potential driving instructor. They display a pink badge and are in training to become an approved driving instructor (ADI). An ADI displays a green badge.
The Journey to Becoming an ADI
PDI’s must pass 2 exams and complete training courses before teaching. They then teach learners to gain experience before taking their final exam to become an ADI.
- Anyone taking payment for lessons without a badge is breaking the law.
- After passing the first two tests and 40 hours of training with an instructor, PDIs can apply for a trainee licence which allows them to provide driving lessons for 6 months to gain experience before their final test.
- The licence lasts 6 months with 3 test attempts to become an ADI.
Insurance and Legalities
Driving instructors should have insurance that covers liability risks. Instructor insurance is different from regular car insurance.
Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)
- PDI also means pre-delivery inspection to ensure vehicles are working properly before customer delivery.
Maintenance and Training
- The PDI technician fills fluids and performs basic maintenance when vehicles arrive at dealerships.
- PDI certification demonstrates competency in instructional design and training delivery, requiring 3 years of experience and coursework.
Continuing Professional Development
- PDI offers online educator courses approved for graduate credit through UCSD Extension which are worth 5 units and 50 training hours.
Additional Information
- PDI members get emails about lectures and conferences, with registration available online.
