Overview of ScreenX
ScreenX is a panoramic film format introduced in 2012 by CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of the CJ CGV group. It combines dual-sided, 270-degree screens with 4DX motion-theater technology. Co-developed by KAIST, ScreenX competes with IMAX and streaming platforms.
The technology is installed in 364 screens across 37 countries. ScreenX fully surrounds viewers with left, right, and main screens, providing an immersive experience. Unlike IMAX, ScreenX’s expanded images are displayed on side walls.
Utilization of ScreenX in Films
ScreenX requires films to be edited post-production for the format. However, using three cameras in pre-production is preferred for optimal results. Movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Spiderman have successfully utilized ScreenX technology. The side walls of the theater are lined with fabric, with two projectors used on each side to absorb the peripheral vision into the screen.
Difference Between ScreenX and IMAX
ScreenX presents films with expanded, dual-sided, 270-degree screens and is designed to provide a panoramic viewing experience. Created by CJ 4DPLEX, the technology competes with IMAX and streaming platforms. Unlike IMAX, which offers a seamless viewing experience, ScreenX displays expanded images on side walls while still enhancing the immersive scenes for viewers.
