Driving Instructor Terminology
What does ADI stand for? ADI stands for ‘approved driving instructor’. An approved driving instructor is one who has completed all three parts of the ADI test process and has signed up to the government’s ADI register.
What is a PDI in driving? Until a trainee has passed the third and final part of the ADI test, the instructor will be called a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI). They may sometimes also be called the trainee instructor. Once a PDI has passed their training they will be considered as an approved driving instructor (ADI).
The Path to Becoming a Driving Instructor
How long does it take to become a driving instructor? Looking at the averages as a rough guide, your training to become a driving instructor will most likely take between 6 to 9 months. That being said, it could be done sooner, everyone learns at their own pace and it depends on the quality of your teachers.
It’s only valid for 6 months and if you don’t manage to pass the final ADI test within 3 attempts it will be revoked and you have to start from square one. While using your licence you need to be working through a particular driving school—trainees are not allowed to provide lessons on an independent basis.
Once you’ve passed your part 3 you’ll also be seen as less of a risk by insurance companies, and this should generally be reflected by lower premiums. It’s still worth shopping around for a good deal though, as some will be able to offer you a far more competitive price for your ADI insurance.
Pre-delivery Inspection
What does PDI stand for? PDI stands for Pre-delivery inspection. Before you take delivery of your new car, the dealer will carry out a PDI to ensure the vehicle is in full working order and is safe to drive.
The PDI process is essential as it aims to ensure that the vehicle is in good quality and suitable for a customer to use. It helps to identify any issues that may have occurred during the manufacturing, assembling, or transportation process that might impact its overall performance.
Requirements and Costs
How much does it cost to become a PDI driving instructor? Trainee licences cost you £140 and an ADI must sponsor the PDI. In this context, sponsoring does not mean paying for the fee, but rather agreeing to coach the PDI.
What will you learn in an Approved Driving Instructor theory test? The ADI theory test is broken down into two parts, the first part being a multiple-choice exam, and the second being a hazard perception test.
If you want to teach people how to drive for money, then you need a license from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). This will require passing a series of tests.
What do I need before sitting the test? Before booking your ADI test appointment, make sure that you have all the necessary documents: Your provisional entitlement letter (D1). A valid passport or national identity card as a form of photo ID.
