Responsibilities and Roles in Maritime Operations
The Master, or Captain, oversees all aspects of the vessel’s operations, from navigation to administrative duties. The Master must hold a Deck Class I Certificate of Competency, reflecting extensive knowledge and experience in maritime operations.
Boatswain Responsibilities
The boatswain is the highest ranking unlicensed member of the deck department. The boatswain carries out the tasks instructed by the chief mate, directing the able seaman and ordinary seaman.
Seaman Ranks and Duties
- The boatswain does tasks ordered by the chief mate, directing able and ordinary seamen.
- An able seaman (AB) works under the boatswain, handling tasks like mooring, gear, anchor, and cargo.
- An ordinary seaman (OS) is the lowest rank in the deck department of a ship, assisting able seamen and performing various duties onboard.
Deck Department Structure
Seafaring is a profession that has various roles. The crew is generally grouped into four departments: deck, engineering, steward, and others. The ranks carry different duties vital to operating a ship.
Captain’s Responsibilities
The Captain shoulders responsibilities and oversees operations. The Captain regulates transactions and handles legal affairs. A deck crew includes: Captain, Mates, Boatswain, Able Seamen, and Ordinary Seamen. The Boatswain directs Able and Ordinary Seamen in their duties.
