Florida has a history of hurricanes. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan caused over $19 billion in damage. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew caused over $26 billion in damage. Alligators are also common in Florida. They can be very dangerous and have attacked people. The Zika virus is another scare in Florida. It is a mosquito-borne virus that causes birth defects.
The I-4 Dead Zone and Lightning
Interstate 4 in central Florida is known as the "Dead Zone" due to the high number of accidents. Between Tampa and Daytona Beach, central Florida is the lightning capital of the USA. Since 1953, lightning has killed 468 people in Florida while hurricanes have killed 216. Lightning often precedes rain by miles. When you see a storm approach, head inside.
Ghost Stories and Legends
Ghost stories are common in Florida. There are haunting tales of theaters, hotels, and murdered children. Some ghosts seem to want to still enjoy entertainment.
The town of Cassadaga has many mediums and spiritualists. The Cassadaga Hotel welcomes visitors interested in ghosts.
During a full moon, some claim a bridge near Wauchula runs red. The myth says a midwife who murdered infants haunted the bridge. She saw a bucket fill with blood from the babies she killed.
Parts of Florida have legends like Bigfoot. Many areas have odd stories that scare locals and tourists.
