The South Carolina File Number is a unique identifier used for company taxes and is required by law for all companies operating within South Carolina. This includes corporations, LLCs, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and limited liability companies.
How to Obtain Your South Carolina File Number
You can find your Withholding File Number on any notices you’ve received from the SC Department of Revenue. If you’re unable to locate this, you can contact the agency at (844) 898-8542, option 4. Additionally, you can find an existing Withholding Number on Form WH-1605 (Withholding Quarterly Return) or WH-1606 (Employer’s Fourth Quarter/Annual Reconciliation).
To get a new file number, you may:
- Apply online via the S.C. Secretary of State’s Office.
- Use an agent to complete the process for you.
- Download a copy of the SCDOR-111 (Tax Registration Application) from the Department of Revenue website, complete the form, and mail it to the address provided.
Finding and Using Your File Number
- Your SC File Number is also known as your Withholding File Number or State Tax ID Number.
- After applying, you will receive a Withholding packet in approximately two weeks.
Obtaining a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
An EIN identifies your business to the IRS. It is not issued by the South Carolina Secretary of State, but by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
To obtain an EIN, you can:
- Register online.
- Complete and submit Form SS-4.

- Certificate numbers are printed in red on all US Certificates of Naturalization or Certificates of Citizenship issued since September 27, 1906. They may also be found on some indexes to court naturalization records.
