Upholstery Techniques and Skills
Upholsterers construct or repair upholstered furniture by covering with materials such as leather, cotton or suede. Their job description entails building or rebuilding furniture such as sofas, mattresses, and chairs by replacing damaged frames and padding with fabrics. Verdi’s rule of thumb is that anything with straight lines can be successfully upholstered by a beginner.
Understanding Upholstery
Upholstery is done in layers, with leather usually being the top layer and fabric the bottom layer. Before you lay your fabric out, it can be helpful to familiarize yourself with some important upholstery tips.
Upholsterer Certification
Upholsterer certification is a formal recognition of an individual’s expertise in upholstery. Certification is awarded to those who demonstrate high skill and is granted by organizations like the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF).
