What is the difference between giant slalom and slalom? Giant slalom has characteristics of both slalom and downhill, the latter being a longer and faster race. The gates in giant slalom are wider and further apart, and the course is longer than in slalom.
Missing a Slalom Gate
What happens if you miss a slalom gate? The direction of the gate is vertical rather than horizontal, but the principle is still the same, the skier has to break the imaginary line between the two poles of the same colour. Missed gates result in shapes:
