What Projectors Do IMAX Use? IMAX Projector Technology

IMAX Corporation has released four projector types using a 15-perforation, 70 mm film format: GT (Grand Theatre), GT 3D (dual rotor), SR (Small Rotor), and MPX. The IMAX projection system creates stunning visuals synonymous with the IMAX brand.

The IMAX projector uses a xenon arc lamp extremely sensitive and requiring extreme care. IMAX theaters have stadium seating emphasizing the audience directly facing the screen.

IMAX Corporation is a Canadian company founded in Montreal in 1967 after Expo 67. It designs and manufactures IMAX cameras and projectors and distributes films to IMAX theaters worldwide. Operations are in Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles. Successful products include simulator rides and ridefilm systems combining IMAX projection with motion programming and sound.

In 2008, IMAX extended into traditional theaters with Digital IMAX, using 2K projectors on 1.90:1 screens.

Business Segments

  • The IMAX systems segment designs, manufactures, and leases IMAX theater equipment.
  • The theater maintenance segment maintains IMAX equipment.
  • The joint revenue sharing arrangements segment installs IMAX equipment in exchange for box office and concession percentages.
  • The film production and IMAX DMR segment produces and remasters films.
  • The film distribution segment distributes films.

The first IMAX film, Tiger Child, debuted at Expo ‘70 in Osaka. The first permanent IMAX theater opened at Ontario Place in Toronto in 1971. In 1974 a large IMAX screen was used at Expo ‘74 in Spokane. IMAX projectors use a 15 kW xenon lamp. Transporting the large film stock challenged cameras and projectors. Conventional 70mm systems were too unsteady for the high magnification.
