Lake Chaubunagungamaug, known as Webster Lake, is in Webster, Massachusetts. The lake’s name means "fishing place at the boundary." Historians agree the name refers to when the lake was a gathering place for Nipmuc Indians.
The lake has an area of 1,442 acres and reaches a depth of 15 meters. It is the state’s third-largest body of freshwater.
In 1921, the name was fancifully expanded to 45 letters over 14 syllables. The humorous translation is “Englishmen and Indians fishing at the neutral fishing place." Locals created this long name.
Lake Chaubunagungamaug freezes in winter. The top birds seen there are American Crow and Mallard. Plants include Canadian Clearweed and Wild Sarsaparilla.
The lake has been central to Native Americans. Now, it provides recreation like boating, swimming, and fishing to Webster residents and visitors. Its islands and clear waters make it a treasured part of the community.
