Beauty salons, nail bars, tattoo and massage studios, physical therapy businesses, and spas across England will be able to reopen safely from Monday 13 July. Updated COVID-19 secure guidance sets measures for close contact services to protect staff and customers. Treatments such as manicures, pedicures, and body waxes will restart. However, treatments involving touching another person’s face, like facials and eyebrow threading, will remain banned due to the risk of spreading germs.
Booking and Availability
Mobile beauty therapists may resume business on 12 April, and like salons, their appointments are expected to fill up quickly. In Wales, hairdressers and barbers received the green light to reopen for pre-booked appointments from Monday 15th March, but beauty salons were still required to remain closed until 12 April.
Spa Facilities
- Saunas and steam rooms at spas will not open until 17 May at the earliest.
- Overnight stays will also be allowed only from that date.
Nail salons and other related services will follow safety measures similar to hairdressers, including sanitization stations, masks for staff, and extra cleaning. Despite the gradual reopening, not all treatments will be available, especially those involving work directly in front of the face.
Nail salons will remain open in Tier 3 as they fall under personal care, which is permissible in all three tiered alert levels. The journey towards full reopening has seen several setbacks—while hair salons reopened on 4 July, for instance, nail salons had to wait until 13 July.
