Start cloth diapering when you feel ready. Some start from day one, while others wait until the meconium passes, about one week. Try disposables first if unsure, but you can switch to cloth anytime, even months later. Cloth diapers fit most newborns since they adjust small. One-size diapers typically fit around 10-14 weeks. Traveling or frequent changes may need disposables.
Building Your Stash
Before the birth, build up your cloth diaper stash. All-in-one diapers have absorbent material inside, whereas prefolds require a separate cover. One-size diapers often don’t fit newborns well, starting to fit better around 12 pounds, which is typically at 2-3 months of age. Flats, prefolds, and covers are more affordable options. You can buy these used and sell them when you’re done. Cloth wipes can be added to the diaper pail if they’re allowed, but keep in mind that some may develop mildew. Remember to donate old diapers to families in need when you no longer require them.
Transition and Potty Training
Solids will typically make bowel movements more solid after 6-12 months. Once you begin potty training, cloth diapers can be helpful in cueing the child. Inserts can be used to boost nighttime absorbency. Remember that starting at birth or any time later is fine; it’s about what works best for you and your baby.
