Shutting Off Your Sprinkler System
- Shut off the water to your sprinkler system. The shutoff valve is often located in the basement, a utility room, or closet. Turn the handle perpendicular to the pipe to shut the water-flow off.
- You should shut off your irrigation system just before temperatures in your region begin to dip below freezing at night. Shut off each head when the spray of water ends.
- The main water supply for a sprinkler system is located between the sprinkler controller and your home. You can find the main shutoff valve there, located on your irrigation system near a faucet bib. The valve may be placed in a box to protect it from the elements.
Marking Valves and System Zones
- Mark each valve with a white paint marker to indicate a zone number that it operates.
Turning Off the Water to Your Sprinkler System
-
To turn off the water to your sprinkler system for the winter, locate the main water shut-off valve and turn it clockwise until fully closed. Your system may have a backflow preventer with two valves – turn them clockwise to shut them off too. To prevent damage from freezing, open drain valves or test cocks on the backflow preventer to release residual water. Reverse these steps to turn the system back on in spring. Taking these precautions will protect your system from freezing and ensure it is ready for use when the weather warms up.
-
If there is a leak in your system, turning off the water will prevent more from leaking out and costing you money. If areas are overwatered, turning off the water will help conserve it.
-
To turn off the water:
- Inspect the system for leaks or damage before turning off water.
- Locate the main water shut off valve between the controller and your home. It may be in a box outside to protect it.
- Turn the valve handle clockwise until fully closed.
-
If the backflow preventer itself is leaking, there is another option – the main supply line inside your basement or garage. There are two levers – one for the whole house, one just for sprinklers. Turn the sprinkler lever to the perpendicular "off" position.
