Pure Barre Origins and Growth
Pure Barre first burst onto the fitness scene in 2001, when founder Carrie Rezabek Dorr opened the very first location in an office basement in Birmingham, MI. After earning a Business degree from Michigan State and a Law Degree from Wayne State, Carrie opened her first studio where she developed the Pure Barre Technique. In September of 2011, Lori Gray and Kelly Dicken Newman decided to open the first Pure Barre location in Greater Cincinnati.
Pure Barre began franchising in July 2009 and now boasts over 500 locations across North America. Studios range in size from 1,000 to 1,800 square feet to accommodate these needs, but the sweet spot for the company is right around 1,500 square feet.
Workout Philosophy and Studio Atmosphere
Barre is considered an effective workout routine for toning the body because it involves isometric exercises which lead to muscle toning. Each Pure Barre studio has its own unique, tight-knit community. The owner and staff of the Rockville Franchise have created a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
Criticism and Changes
Despite being the largest barre franchise, Pure Barre has faced its fair share of criticism, especially following the takeover by Xponential. The change in ownership led to a shift in the studios’ ambiance, with some locations feeling more sterile and corporate after required makeovers, while others view it as a positive transformation.
