History of Ultramar
- In 1961, British oil company Ultramar plc established operations in Canada with retail stations branded "Golden Eagle." Ten years later, a refinery was built in Lévis, Quebec.
- In 1991, Ultramar plc was bought by Lasmo, another British oil company. Lasmo spun off the North American operations, which became Ultramar Corporation in 1992.
Valero’s Acquisition of Ultramar
- On December 31, 2001 Valero Energy Corporation acquired Ultramar Diamond Shamrock. On May 1, 2013, Ultramar was spun off from Valero into CST Brands.
- The Ultramar deal made Valero the second largest U.S. refiner at the time with 1.87 million barrels per day capacity.
Ultramar Today
- Ultramar is an Eastern Canadian gas and home fuel retailer, with its head office located in Montreal, Quebec. It is the largest oil brand in Quebec and operates gas stations and home fuel delivery in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada.
- Valero is an international manufacturer and marketer of fuels and petrochemicals. With the Ultramar acquisition, Valero became one of the largest fuel retailers in the U.S. and Canada with over 5,000 retail outlets.
