Origins of Hot Rods
Hot rods started in California in the 1920’s with adrenaline junkies racing modified cars on salt flats. They reduced weight and improved performance. After WWII, hot rodding gained momentum as mechanics applied military skills to build dream cars. Although the term "hot rod" started earlier with upgraded camshafts, Model T and A stripping began in the mid-‘20s. -
Evolution and Popularity
In the 1950s, hot rodders added custom paint jobs and formed associations. The NHRA formed to govern drag racing, holding its first event in 1955. Engine swaps often used Ford flatheads over 4 inches. Hot rods entered pop culture, with HOT ROD editor Wally Parks seeking Hollywood’s attention. -
Hot Rods in Popular Culture
First called "hot rods" in 1930s California, people raced modified cars on dry lake beds under the Southern California Timing Association. They became hugely popular in 1950s Southern California as post-war hobby for mechanics and racing fans.
