DC Income Tax Refund Process
On average, the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue issues refunds within 6 weeks. Returns may take longer due to errors, incomplete information, or credits claimed. The COVID-19 pandemic and IRS understaffing have also caused delays.
To check your refund status, use the Where’s My Refund tool on IRS.gov. The fastest way to get a refund is filing electronically with direct deposit. The IRS has extended the tax deadline to October 16, 2023. Do not rely on receiving your refund by a certain date when making purchases.
Check Your DC State Tax Refund
Taxpayers can view refund status online at MyTax.DC.gov. If it has been over 21 days, your return may need additional review, especially for incorrect Recovery Rebate Credits.
Nonresidents who erroneously had DC income tax withheld or made estimated tax payments may file Form D-40B to request a refund. A DC Resident is an individual that maintains a place of abode within DC for 183 days or more.
