Why Did Bratz Stop? History of Bratz Dolls

Bratz were discontinued in 2016 after a poorly executed re-branding and low sales. Isaac Larian announced Bratz would return in Fall 2018. In 2008, a California judge ordered MGA to stop making Bratz dolls after a jury found in favour of Mattel. However, this ruling was overturned. Bratz returned in 2015 with redesigned dolls that were taller, with bigger heads and feet. Launching dolls made up of 75% ethnic minorities is what Bratz did.

In 2008, Mattel sued MGA and Bryant, claiming Mattel owned Bratz. Mattel sought an injunction to stop Bratz sales. Although a jury awarded Mattel $100 million, this was overturned on appeal. In a separate federal suit, Mattel sued MGA for $1 billion and exclusive Bratz rights.

Bratz have been criticized as overly sexualized. They come dressed in miniskirts, fishnets and boas. Bratz sell for $25 to $90 depending on rarity. The four main Bratz are Cloe, Jade, Sasha and Yasmin, who have nicknames like Kool Kat. All have large eyes, full lips and tiny noses with different skin tones. From 2001-2010, 559 different Bratz dolls were made.
