Dally sneaks into the drive-in for free because he enjoys breaking rules. Ponyboy and Johnny go along with Dally’s idea because of his influence over them. At the drive-in, they meet Cherry and Marcia, two Soc girls. Dally makes crude jokes about the girls to embarrass them. Cherry coolly tells Dally to stop and throws her soda at him when he refuses. She compares Socs and Greasers, saying both groups have good and bad people.
Personal Stories and Conflicts
Ponyboy tells Cherry personal stories about Sodapop’s horse, Johnny getting jumped, and feeling that Darry dislikes him. Cherry says that some Socs can be sweet people, like her boyfriend Bob, but also party and fight. Cherry leaves angrily after Dally continues his rude behavior.
