Background on Gas Pump Regulations in Oregon and New Jersey
Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states where self-service gas pumps are illegal. Oregon passed a law in 1951 citing fire safety and job concerns. New Jersey passed a similar law in 1949, also citing safety and costs. The bans have raised gas prices by 3-5 cents per gallon in both states.
Changes in Oregon’s Gas Pump Regulations
In 2021, Oregon’s legislature allowed self-service gas pumps in rural counties with under 40,000 people. Three larger counties allow self-service between 6 pm and 6 am. The state can fine gas stations up to $500 for violations. Drivers face no penalties for pumping their own gas.
Reasons for Prohibiting Self-Service Gas Pumps
Oregon initially banned self-serve gas due to safety worries about untrained people handling flammable fuel. But self-serve pumps were phased out nationally in the 1970s when gas prices spiked. Now Oregonians often appreciate the full-service model. The new laws allow but don’t mandate self-service pumps. So changes may be modest as some stations stick with attendants.
