Technocracy refers to an ideological, scientific and rational positioning that applies to some systems of government, politics and economic management. This form of government is committed to the fact that the problems and issues in the areas that we have mentioned above should be based on quantifiable results and rational measurements instead of on subjective or ideological aspects as is usually the case.
Pros and cons of a technocratic system
For a technocratic political system to function, there must be experts on the subject and technicians who undertake the tasks of verifying that all functions can be carried out and that these are measurable and quantifiable, as we have indicated above.
Therefore, we must bear in mind that responsible people (technocrats) must be specialized in different areas, such as: the economy, demography, urban planning or public management, among many others such as economic policy. Obviously, for technocrats to be able to exercise their function, a political system and legislation must be in place that is based on this political-ideological position.
Regarding the points in favor of the technocracy we find:
- This type of system drives away populism and demagogy.
- The technocrat has some power over political majorities, as they serve as advisers to the rulers.
- It is a political system in which no religion or totalitarianism is reflected, which may affect the functioning of the government.
As for the most negative aspects of this thought, we highlight:
- Controversy may exist due to the fact that there is more than one solution to a certain problem, so it is necessary that there be certain objective values to settle the issue.
- A system of inequality and social injustice could be created by giving more importance to some individuals over others for educational or economic reasons
